We’ve transitioned to using Finn rams from a milky line from high % East Friesian rams. The reason for this change is that Finn rams will grow to 170 – 195 lbs which is smaller than the near 250 lb EF ram we had before. Beyond that, Finn rams are friendly and much more easily managed than most other breeds. Finally, Finns have lovely fleece, much better than ‘carpet quality’ EFs.
We keep two rams for breeding options so we are able to offer ‘starter packages’ of one or two ewe lambs and one ram lamb.
Fredo
If there is such a thing as a soul ram, Freddo is it. He’s gentle and easy going as evidenced by the fact that he really let us put a Santa hat on him for a Christmas photo.. He’s quite the gentleman when placed with the ladies too. At 175 lbs, he’s about average size for a Finn. ram. I honestly cannot imagine not having him around.
Oliver
Friendly is Oliver’s middle name. He’s always the first to come over for a scratch and shows his pleasure with tail wags. This guy loves to please. He’s a bit higher energy than Fredo. When crossed with our EF ewe Louise, he’s sired some of our cutest lambs ever. Paired with a pure Finn ewe, the fleece quality has been superb. He’s a rare brown sheep although he does have just a spec of white on his right jaw line. We consider ourselves lucky to have Oliver.
